How have you used Narrative?

Within my media product, I did include a short story within the multimedia music video.

However, because of the nature in which I presented my story through a Backwards Narrative method, this story could be hard to decipher for the audience to understand.

Through research of various Narrative theories and theorists, I can apply Roland Barthes theory to my short music video narrative.

There is the Action Code- in which a man is running away from something. Within the presentation of the music video however, the man is running backwards. This Action code continues throughout the music video, until he jumps a flight of stairs, further suggesting he is in fact running away from something. Once this Action code finishes, he frantically presses an elevator button and looks around him with a panicked expression. The door behind the man suddenly bursts open only to reveal the hand that is opening it, and gives the audience a clear indication that the man is running away from something. He then runs backwards through a door, looking behind him as he bursts through the door, making it clear that the man was running away from the stranger who opened the door in the previous shot- has also helped keep continuity.

The Enigma codes are:
Who/What is he running away from?
Why is he running away?
What is the significance of the location of the car park?
Who is this man?
What did he do?
Why is he so scared?

Semantic codes:
Running Man: Looks quirky. Does not conform to stereotypes. Not much thought and effort put into his appearance. Innocent. Frightened. Victimised. Isolated.

Symbolic codes:
Closed off car pak suggests isolation.
Change from Monochrome to Bright, Vivid Colour and the change from Backwards Action to Forwards Action suggests a difference in time.
